Security Awareness Training
Security awareness training is an ongoing effort to educate the FHSU community about policies, procedures, and best practices relating to information security. It will teach you how to create a good password, how to spot phishing scams, how to handle sensitive information, and more.
FHSU has purchased an online computer-based training program produced by SANS, one of the most trusted sources for information security training and security certification in the world. Training consists of a number of videos that cover specific security topics. The videos range anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes in length and can be completed at your own pace.
How It Works
- Log in to Security Awareness Training with your TigerNetID username and password. Student employees and graduate assistants must use their student employee TigerNetID (username ends in .se).
- Click "Defend the Fort, Cyber Edition".
- Click "Start this Course" or "Continue this Course" or choose a module from the list.
- You may complete all modules in one sitting, or break them up however you like. The module icons will turn green when a module is completed, and the circle in the upper right corner will show what percentage of the course is complete.
- When you have completed the course, click the "Achievements" link in the top navigation bar to download your certificate. The certificate is for your records only, and does not need to be turned in to anyone.
Frequently Asked Questions
I never received a welcome email, or I can't find my welcome email. What do I do?
Try logging in to Security Awareness Training with your TigerNetID username and password. If you receive an error message:
- Faculty/Staff: contact securityawareness@fhsu.edu. Be sure to include details about the error message you received in the email.
- Student Employee: Student employees must login using a .se student employee account. If you are a student employee experiencing trouble logging in, try opening an incognito window in Chrome, or an In Private window in Firefox, and then try to login with your TigerNetID username that ends in .se.
Who has to do it?
Short answer: Anyone employed by FHSU who uses a computer to do their job or has an @fhsu.edu email address, or anyone at an affiliated organization with access to FHSU computing resources or an @fhsu.edu email address.
Long answer:
- Faculty (including adjuncts, FHSU Online, part-time, and full-time)
- Staff (including part-time and full-time)
- Temporary staff who use computers at work or have FHSU email addresses

How long will it take?
Training will take 30-60 minutes, depending on your Internet connection and how well you do on the quizzes.
If you handle financial information or accept credit card payments, your assigned course will include 1 or 2 additional modules. This will add less than 10 minutes to your training.
When is it due?
The annual training typically kicks off in late October and is due near the end of November. You will receive an email with specific due dates and links to the training in late October.
What if I don't complete training?
Your TigerNetID will be suspended until you make plans to complete training.
Why are we doing this?
Each member of the FHSU community plays a large part in keeping our systems and data secure. There has been a nation-wide increase in cyber-attacks aimed at higher ed institutions, and security experts expect the number of attacks to continue increasing. The majority of attacks rely on tricking humans into letting the attackers in. The best way to defend against these attacks is to educate everyone who accesses FHSU computing systems.
Also, it is required by FHSU policy and the Kansas Information Technology Executive Council.
How can I tell if I'm done?
- Click on "Achievements" in the top navigation bar. If you can download the certificate for your Defend the Fort course, then you've completed your required training.
- Click on "Home." The courses widget will display courses that haven't been finished. Click on "Completed" to display the courses that have been finished.
