Frequently Asked Questions About HPMC
Listed below are some common questions parents and campers have about camp. Look for updated information as it becomes available as itineraries become finalized. If you have any further questions feel free to contact us at (785) 628-5353 or p_lillpopp@fhsu.edu.
How will my child be monitored?
Counselors are on duty all day, working closely with the campers in their activities. All residence hall facilities are strictly supervised. Infractions of regulations will result in appropriate action by the camp's supervisors.
What do the students do each day?
All students are placed in at least one large ensemble (band, orchestra, or choir) after their Sunday audition. The large ensembles rehearse twice a day. Students are also placed in a small ensemble, such as Jazz Band, Clarinet Choir, Low Brass Choir, String Quartet, Cello Choir, or Vocal Choir, which rehearse once a day throughout the week. The daily music curriculum is complete with a sectional rehearsal/masterclass and an elective mini course. Throughout the week campers attend evening recitals and concerts presented by the featured artists, faculty and fellow students.
What about recreation?
Recreation time is scheduled every afternoon. Activities include tennis tournaments, a ping-pong play-off, volleyball, dodge ball, softball and flag football on various days throughout the week. Special events like a Rock, Paper, Scissor Contest, and Camp Idol (talent show) Contest are also planned. Music practicing, private lessons, resting in the dorm or visiting with fellow campers may also take place during this time. A camp dance rounds out a stellar week of socializing and fun!
What do the camp fees cover?
The camp fee includes tuition, room, meals, extensive music instruction and coaching. There is an additional fee if campers choose to take private lessons on their instrument ($25 per 30-minute lesson). Lesson fees are collected directly by the private instructor when they are scheduled. Day Campers have three meal plan options: 1) no meal plan, 2) lunch meal card for $60, or 3) lunch and dinner meal card for $100.
What about scholarships?
We will be speaking with donors throughout the year and hope to be able to offer financial assistance for the camp. Check back on the website for updates.
Can I bring my car to camp?
No cars are allowed during band camp. Campers driving to camp must turn in their keys to the head counselors for the week.
How many teachers are there at camp?
The ratio of campers to staff is approximately 5 - 1.
Who is eligible for the HS bands, orchestras, or choir?
Students entering grades 9 - 13 in the Fall are eligible for the high school division. Band players may participate in the HS level band and Orchestra. String players participate in the Symphony Orchestra.
Who is eligible for the Middle School bands and orchestras?
Students who will be in grades 6-8 in the Fall are classified as Middle School students, and participate in either the MS Band or the MS String Orchestra.
May I request my own roommate?
Campers may request a desired roommate. Middle and High School campers may not share the same room.
What if I need to cancel my registration at camp?
Written cancellations received prior to June 15 will receive a refund less the non-refundable deposit. No refunds made after June 15.
What will the dates be for future music camps?
Those involved with the camp would like to avoid all conflicts but this is unfortunately not possible. To eliminate as many conflicts as possible, camp will be held each year in the second full week of July. The full list of future dates can be found under the "Future Dates" tab.
