FHSU Tiger Tots Preschool Center
We have regularly scheduled drills to teach the staff and children the best method to stay safe in the listed situations. We prepare by having all staff trained in crisis response procedures. Each staff member is aware of their responsibilities should a crisis occur. Our whole school family is responsible for crisis management. Students look to their teachers to provide leadership, guidance and modeling on how to respond to the crisis. Our teachers lead age-appropriate classroom discussions to reduce the stress experienced by emergencies.
Fire Exit Plan
If the fire alarm is activated, the children will be brought into a group and counted. We will immediately proceed out of the north exit door. We will then exit through the south gate and wait by the designated tree on the east side of Tiger Tots. We will wait for the all-clear signal given by campus security and return to our classroom if possible. Family members will be notified to pick up their child in the case of an actual fire.
Tornado Safety
March through September are the months most likely to produce severe storms, although severe weather can occur anytime. The staff will take the children to a safe shelter, away from windows, in the event of a tornado warning. The south hallway is the designated area to seek shelter. Children practice safely positioning their bodies, facing the wall, and covering their heads with their hands.
Our main objectives will be to keep the children safe and calm. Please remember that we will be in our designated tornado shelter if severe weather is imminent. We will remain there until we receive notification from authorities that the danger has passed, and we will return to the classroom.
Active Shooter
The children will immediately be taken to the designated area. We will remain in the designated area until the all-clear signal.
Bomb Threat Evacuation Plan
The building supervisor or police will verbally notify the staff during a bomb threat using a code word. The children will exit the building and get to the designated area as soon as possible. We will remain in the designated area until the all-clear signal.
Snow Cancellations
Snow days are those rare days that Fort Hays State University closes due to severe winter weather. The Center will not open if FHSU officials announce that classes are canceled. If FHSU campus classes are closed, Tiger Tots will be closed, even if FHSU offices are open. Please go to the FHSU website, listen to MIX 103.3, Y102, KAYS, or watch channel 10.
Flood Evacuation Plan
If flooding occurs, we will contact family members by phone and request children be picked up immediately if road conditions permit. If it is impossible to get to the Center safely, the children will remain at Tiger Tots until it is safe to pick them up.
Critical Injury
The director or teaching staff will immediately inform parents of a serious accident/incident. The emergency medical technicians will be contacted by calling 911.
