Student Engagement
Student Engagement fosters co-curricular learning, leadership development, and personal growth by championing social engagement, cultural enrichment, community service, and intellectual development. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for students to learn, serve, and lead throughout their time at Fort Hays State University. Our ultimate goal is to empower students, cultivate personal growth, and prepare them to emerge as engaged global citizen-leaders. Actively participating not only enriches classroom learning but also equips students with invaluable skills essential for fostering success in both the community and the workplace.
Student Engagement provides the following experiences:
- Student Government: Serving as a student senator or on the leadership cabinet. Leading debates, public speaking forums, or participating in activities that enhance leadership skills.
- Fraternity & Sorority Life: Fraternities and Sororities are one of the best ways for students to grow their leadership capacity and get involved in campus life! Students build a community of friends and enrich their college experience.
- Organization Leadership: Participating and/or serving in leadership positions within student organizations related to specific interests, hobbies, or academic disciplines. Whether you want to join a group or start your own, student organizations give you the opportunity to make friends, build leadership skills, and make a positive change on campus.
- Event Planning: Organizing and leading teams for events, conferences, workshops, or other activities on campus.
- Educational Programming: Leading or organizing learning experiences for students; such as cultural events, exhibitions, or performances.
- Cultural & Diversity Programs: Student Engagement offers educational diversity programs and experiences to help people feel welcomed, valued, and respected at FHSU. By better understanding what makes people, cultures, and genders different, we learn how to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, which builds community and prepares us for the working world.
- Community Engagement: Leading or volunteering for community outreach programs or initiatives.
- Community Service: Leading, organizing, or volunteering for community service projects.

Co-curricular leadership development occurs through students' learning, experimentation and active involvement in leadership roles within various activities and organizations. This involvement spans leading student organizations, heading planning committees or projects, and championing community engagement and service initiatives. These experiences play a crucial role in fostering engaged citizen-leaders and contribute significantly to the holistic personal and professional development of students.
