English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
The ESOL program at FHSU prepares educators to help students from different cultural backgrounds learn English. The program offers two tracks, making it easier for educators to follow the track that is most convenient. Both the ESOL endorsement track and the MSE in ESOL program are available completely online, which provides a great deal of convenience and flexibility for working educators. Courses are offered year-round in the fall, spring, and summer sessions, making it easy for incoming candidates to enter the program at any time.
Educators interested in obtaining their ESOL endorsement or MSE in ESOL will delve deep into the theories of language learning and development. Candidates completing the program engage in researched-based practices that enhance their knowledge on how to work with English language learners. A culminating field experience is required in both programs, ensuring that candidates have an opportunity to put theory into practice. Upon completion, candidates can apply for an ESOL endorsement in the state of Kansas. The MSE in ESOL is accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
The ESOL endorsement track requires 15 hours of coursework. The courses are all focused on strategies that help educators have the skills needed to work with English language learners. The MSE in ESOL requires 33 hours of course work and a comprehensive exam, given after all required course work is completed. Candidates interested in obtaining a MSE in ESOL will gain knowledge on how to work with English language learners and expand on skills that prepare candidates for future career options.
