Applied Learning Experiences
Our curriculum emphasizes applied learning experiences. As an Applied Business Studies student, you'll get hands-on learning opportunities that empower you to take classroom theory and put it to work in real-world, practical experiences. You'll not only gain valuable work experience, but you'll also build a strong resume and have an advantage over many other job seekers.
Internships
Some degree programs, like Tourism and Hospitality Management, require an internship to graduate. Other programs strongly encourage internships. An internship gives you documentable practical experience, and is a great way to get your foot in the door to a company or profession. It's also a great way to start building your professional network. Our faculty are well connected with people in industry and can help you find an internship that will help you achieve your professional goals.
Service Learning
Service learning is an opportunity to take what you learn in the classroom and work in a business setting that applies your knowledge in a real-world way. In short, you learn and internalize your learning by performing services that utilize that knowledge. You benefit, and so do the businesses and communities who participate.
Study Abroad
Expose yourself to other cultures and other ways of doing business. A "study abroad" experience is the perfect way to put your learning into international context. Study in England, France, China, or in other countries to broaden your horizons and give you a totally new way to look at the world. The FHSU Office of Study Abroad will assist you in finding a national or international experience that's just right for you. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in business tours when applicable.
Business Tours and Guest Speakers
As part of your learning, you'll be exposed to a variety of learning experiences. Your instructors will bring in guest speakers who have been successful in business so that you can hear first-hand what is involved in setting up and running a profitable enterprise.
Student Organizations
Student organizations like Eta Sigma Delta and Collegiate DECA provide opportunities for students to participate in group activities and competitions in Hays and around the country. Recent places where annual conferences and competitions have been held include Anaheim, Louisville, and Orlando. These organizations offer a great place to start your professional network, as well as giving you an outlet for your creative energies.
