Hands On Learning: Communication Sciences and Disorders
While you spend lots of time in classes, gaining valuable knowledge and learning new skills, learning happens outside of the classroom as well! Here are a few ways in which you can put your degree program into action:
Undergraduate Clinic
Undergraduate students have the unique opportunity to apply for undergraduate clinic during the spring semester of their senior year. Students learn about clinical procedures and participate in their first experience as a student clinician. As clinicians, students get hands experience working with clients experiencing speech or language problems under the direct supervision of a clinical supervisor from the department.
Participate in Research
Students in the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders may participate in undergraduate research, providing hands-on work outside the classroom to develop research skills for academic and professional pursuits. Students develop working relationships with a faculty mentors and get a glimpse into graduate or professional school life. Learn about undergraduate research!
Go to Conferences
Some students have the opportunity to attend the Kansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (KSHA) state conference and/or the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) national conference each year, providing them the opportunity to participate in workshops related to their areas of interest and collaborate with other professionals and students. In addition, students who have participated in research may have the opportunity to present their research at the state or national conventions!
