FINANCIAL RESOURCES
The Financial Assistance Office
The Fort Hays State University Financial Assistance Office is keenly aware that the move to online classes and closure of the main campus is creating some concern for Fort Hays State University students with regard to their financial aid. Our first priority is to make sure that our students are provided with the services they need to continue to be successful. Below is a list of services we offer to students:
Financial aid online consulting
For questions about the status and or changes to that status. Questions regarding loans and other options available to you in the summer or fall of 2020.
Financial Aid changes
Students who declined aid at the beginning of the semester that are now in need of additional funds, can fill out an aid change sheet to receive any money they originally declined. If loans are requested, the student will need to have all processes done as soon as possible. Loans must be originated before the May.
Professional Adjustments
For students who have had a major financial hardship which is not reflected on their income and tax information provided in the FAFSA. Documentation of the financial hardship, including but not limited to; medical emergency, job loss and unexpected expenses incurred are required
Individuals who are no longer in school or are enrolled less than half time and are currently in repayment have had their direct loan payment placed into forbearance until September 30, 2020. During this time interest is not accruing. If you are enrolled at least half-time, you are in deferment until you are no longer enrolled or are enrolled less than half-time. If either of these occur, your loans enter into the six month grace period and interest begins to accrue.
Alternative Loans
For students who have exhausted their financial aid but still have room in their budget and need extra money, an alternative loan may be available. There are many companies that offer alternative loans and we do not promote or recommend any one specifically.

Emergency Funds Available to Students
Federal CARES Act Funds
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed to provide economic relief from COVID-19. One section of the CARES Act established the Higher Education Emergency Relief fund to provide money for universities to use for emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the pandemic. Students who meet basic eligibility criteria for federal financial aid can be considered for these funds. The eligibility requirements are not established by Fort Hays State University, but rather according to federal guidelines. At this point, we have received no funding for this program. Details about the disbursement of these funds will be provided when available.
The FHSU Student Emergency Assistance Fund
The Student Emergency Assistance Fund at Fort Hays State University was established in order to assist students with a financial need that allows them to remain in college such as a purchasing a book, a tank of gas to remain employed, paying a co-pay to address a health need or other small needs. This is funded solely through private donations. Need is evaluated by a Student Government Association (SGA) committee and FHSU representatives. The amount awarded is contingent upon available funding and the number of applications. The desire and mission of the committee is to serve as many students as possible.
