Hands-on Learning
At FHSU, you won't spend hours sitting in boring lecture classes. Instead, gain hands-on experience that puts theory into action working directly with elementary school students, FHSU athletes, and community members. Even as a student, you will have a chance to make a difference, reaching out to the greater community through your classes and projects of your own design.
Teaching and Coaching
Children bring fun and excitement to the learning process through planned events like Kansas Kids Fitness Day, giving you the chance to work with local elementary school children under the supervision of FHSU faculty. Before graduation, students in the teaching concentration complete six hours of student teaching at both the elementary and the secondary education levels. In addition to working in the classroom, many students gain coaching experience with schools throughout the state before beginning student teaching.
Health Promotion and Wellness
Our students get involved in the health and wellness of the campus and community. Experience what it's like to conduct individual fitness programs through the University Wellness Initiative or the Active Aging Program. Help out with a community health fair or participate in Kansas Kids Fitness Day. You can also help stroke survivors to a full recovery through programs offered in the Stroke Center.
Recreation and Sports Management
Service-learning projects help students develop recreation programs, following ideas from conception to execution, for all ages from children to the elderly. You can also officiate games and promote recreation programs through FHSU's popular Intramurals program. Volunteer at the Special Olympics or get involved with other community programs.
Athletic Training
Be ready to handle injuries on the sidelines at FHSU athletics. Athletic Training students complete clinical rotations with the FHSU football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams. Arrangements with Hays High School and the Center for Health Improvement at Hays Medical Center give you the opportunity to use several different athletic training facilities. Partnerships with area high schools give you exposure to the demands of working with young athletes.
Internships
Do you have a dream job in mind? Try it out through an internship. If you come up with an idea, we will do our best to help you achieve it. Some of our students have worked abroad, gaining experience in Africa, Jamaica and France. Although some opportunities are available locally, many students work with state- and nation-wide organizations. Many students are hired by the organizations they intern with, so your internship program can get you started on an exciting career path.
