Education in Action
Hispanic College Institute
FHSU's Hispanic College Institute (HCI) is a residential program that prepares high school Hispanic and Latino students in Kansas to enter and succeed in higher education. Held on the FHSU campus, HCI is based on research and input from Hispanic educators and community leaders, and much of the content is delivered by Hispanics who can relate to the students' experiences and challenges.
Honors College
The mission of the Fort Hays State University Honors College is to develop student leaders who are engaged in their communities, value a diverse and enriching educational environment, and strive for personal growth and academic excellence. The Honors College enrolls approximately 2% of FHSU's most engaged on-campus students, and seeks to expand its opportunities to underserved and online communities in Kansas and beyond. The Honors College unites the two core elements of a great educational institution: ability and commitment. Our students are engaged leaders in the classroom, members in every kind of campus organization, working in the larger community, and traveling around the world!
KAMS
The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) continues to be Kansas' premier academic high school program for the state's best and brightest high school students. KAMS is a unique residential learning experience that provides exceptional high school juniors and seniors a potent blend of college-level instruction by Ph.D. faculty, a high school diploma, and 68 hours of college credit.
Doctorate in Nursing Practice
The Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) is the first doctoral program in the university's history. DNP graduates are trained to work in a variety of health care settings as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN), and prepared to assume key leadership roles in health care.
The Robbins Banking Institute
The Robbins Banking Institute, established in 2017, continues to serve the banking community of Kansas by expanding the professional workforce available to Kansas banks. Through a partnership with the Kansas Bankers Association that was established in 2022 to carry out the goals of the institute, the next generation of the banking industry workforce will be identified, recruited, and educated through the FHSU banking curriculum.
The Center for Entrepreneurship
The Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE) is Fort Hays State University's hub to promote interdisciplinary design, innovation, and entrepreneurial initiatives.
CFE creates innovative, successful student enterprises through specialized curricula, experiential activities and unique resources, including the Dane G. Hansen Scholarship Hall, a unique live/work space for creative, entrepreneurial students in all areas of study.
Effective as of the 2022-2023 academic year, the CFE hosts three premium competitions - a The EPI 2C Entrepreneurship & Design Challenge (formerly Kansas Startup) in the fall, the Faulkner Challenge in the Spring, and a direct competition between FHSU and University of Connecticut students in the Spring. These competitions have $9,500 / $10,000 / and $15,000, respectively at stake. EPI 2C is an acronym for the approach to entrepreneurship and design thinking emphasized: Experiential, Purposeful, Imaginative, Innovative & Creative.
FHSU students performing well in the above competitions have also performed well in regional and national competitions, including winning the Sigma Nu Tau (National) Hot Pitch Competition, and winning the Outstanding Undergraduate Venture Creation Prize in the Regnier Venture Creation Competition while competing against entries from institutions such as Kansas State University, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Missouri - Columbia, University of Nebraska, and Washington University of St. Louis.

Robbins College of Business & Entrepreneurship
- A team of financial planning students have reached the finals of the Financial Planning Challenge national competition the past three years placing fourth and third in the nation in 2020 and 2021 respectively. They will compete for the 2022 title this fall.
- The FHSU Economics Club won first place at the 17th Annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Day in April 2022 in the Non-Empirical Undergraduate Research Poster category.
- An Investment Analytics Lab opened in Spring 2022 in McCartney Hall that houses ten Bloomberg terminals for students to use to become familiar with financial services industry tools. Bloomberg terminals are used by leading business and financial professionals worldwide.
- 2nd Place Finish in the Microsoft Hackathon Mobile Application Development Competition
- Six 1st Place and two 2nd Place Awards at the Kansas Association of Broadcasters 2015 Competition (Kansas' Best)
- 2nd Place Finish in the Kansas Venture Challenge held by Kansas State University
The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
- Art and Design Programs at FHSU continues its unrivaled relationship with leaders in the world of advertising where most of the graduates of the popular graphic design program are hired.
- Criminal Justice Programs National De-Escalation Training Center (NDTC) at Fort Hays State University is the only national center in the State and is a valuable resource for students to experience and as a community resource as it provides training for professionals in a wide array of disciplines including state and local law enforcement professionals in procedures and strategies for de-escalation of violence and increasing the safety of all involved using a wide range of theories and techniques.
- The Criminal Justice Center for Empowering Victims of Gender-based Violence (CEVGV) provides service to the state of Kansas as a repository for data, research and advocacy on issues related to gender-based violence. The CEVGV emphasizes the barriers experienced by underserved victims in rural areas. As students in the public service area of Criminal Justice they will participate in research and advocacy, and if chosen, students will be hired as research staff or interns for the Center.
- Modern Languages Programs offers opportunities for students to build their proficiency across languages and hone, especially their Spanish language skills, for careers in education, business, public service, and the medical field. Students have worked with faculty in translation and interpreting projects for several agencies including the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Sternberg Museum, local medical clinics and have provided this service and bilingual support to agencies, communities, and groups in Western Kansas, across the United States and beyond.
- Students in English Programs, collaborating with faculty, have consistently presented creative and academic work at international and regional conferences and students have been recognized publicly at these conferences. They also host the Writing Center and the Writing Across the Curriculum program to help students improve their writing skills. The English program through a variety of means has facilitated the student experience by providing opportunities for students to develop professionally and in their careers by participating in staffing as “Consultants” in the Writing Center as well as in writing projects and in scholarly work.
- History Programs has launched a podcast, Victor E. History, to highlight original research by students as well as faculty achievements that includes faculty that have authored books as well as notable alumni that now documents hundreds of downloads. They host a popular annual Holocaust Remembrance and Education program for campus and community each year with exceptional speakers that come to campus. Students also engage in experiences that have helped them win awards for research and scholarship for their exceptional work in classroom excellence, leadership, participation in professional organizations, and involvement in civic activities that help launch their careers in the field.
- Music and Theatre Programs have produced many popular events engaging students in performances such as the annual Cathedral Concert, held each December at the beautiful St. Fidelis Basilica in Victoria, KS. Among the many musical events enjoyed by the public are performances by the Hays Symphony, Tiger Marching Band, Fort Hays Singers, and FHSU Jazz Band, all opportunities for students and community members to perform. Students in the program have a wide array of opportunities to participate in ensembles, choir and solo performances where they can develop their talent and refine their creative expression.
- To achieve the goals of Sociology Programs to engage students in community service they maintain an advisory board of CNN Heroes in collaboration with award winning and nationally recognized leaders of nonprofit corporations recognized for outstanding community service. CNN the TV cable network, each year publicly recognizes those doing outstanding work helping others in need. Those recognized are called CNN Heroes. The Sociology Advisory Board of CNN Heroes is engaged in sharing their experiences overseeing innovative nonprofits with students directly and via posts on the website.
