PROGRAM SUMMARY FOR ED.S. IN COUNSELING
What is the Ed. S. in Counseling?
The program is a unique 30 credit hour, post-master’s degree centered around leadership and advanced practices in the counseling profession. The core, Leadership-Focused track, can be completed fully virtual.
Why do it?
The Ed.S. in Counseling is a program that:
Is designed for those who may be interested in seeking a specialization leading to leadership positions in school and clinical agencies, and may lead to new career options.
May be used to lead to a licensed professional counseling certification
Is designed for counselors or educators who seek professional development beyond the masters degree and provides advanced training for roles on the job.
Who can do it?
A person qualifies for the Leadership-Focused track if they have a Masters in Education, Teaching, or a related field. The Ed.S. in Counseling is an advanced degree and, while it does contain curriculum that meets some requirements for certifications, the degree itself does not lead directly to any state licenses/certifications or endorsements.
Admissions Requirements
- Submit an Application to the FHSU Graduate School.
- A statement of professional goals related to the completion of Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree including how achievement of the Ed.S. in Counseling will assist you in achieving your goals.
- A completed Masters Degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Two letters of reference from supervisors and/or professional peers who are familiar with your work and can assess your potential ability and skills to pursue leadership in Counseling.
- A resume or curriculum vita of education and professional experiences.
- Official transcripts for all college work completed documenting conferral of a graduate degree.

Tracks
The core Leadership-Focused track is created for Counselors and Educators who desire an advanced degree leading in Schools and Agencies in the areas of Supervision, Policy, and Research.
Programs of study can be modified if a student wishes to pursue additional licensure credentials You can visit our licensure page for more information pertaining to additional license requirements and our disclosure for licenses in counseling. There are two tracks: The Clinical-Focused & Leadership-Focused Tracks. The Clinical-Focused track does have some courses that meet 2 weekends (Fri-Sat) during a 16-week semester to align with KS LPC requirements.
All tracks contain a course that meets the requirements to become an LCPC-S in Kansas – COUN 900.
All credit toward the specialist in education degree must be earned at FHSU. Any exception to this requirement must have the prior approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.
