Area of Emphasis: Business Communication Studies
To receive an emphasis in Business Communication Studies, the student must complete 12 of the 18 credit hours listed below. A sample of courses might include but are not limited to:
BCOM 201 - Introduction to Corporate Communication
An introductory course in the various aspects of internal and external stakeholder communication. This course includes the study of the mechanics and basic principles of composing stakeholder messages.
BCOM 210 - Introduction to Professional Development
An introductory course in the development of professional behavior and social skills. Emphasis will be on social rapport, etiquette, career planning and the use of technology to enhance one's professional image and network.
BCOM 250 - Word Processing Applications
This course emphasizes the development of text editing/word processing skills; special emphasis will be placed on the development of basic and advanced word processing functions for the efficient use of display-type word processing equipment. Sophisticated computer text editing equipment will be used.
BCOM 300 - Spreadsheet Applications
A comprehensive study of the major features of spreadsheet applications. Students will learn how to operate spreadsheet application software as used in business. Major features will cover the creation, usage, maintenance, and management of spreadsheets. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are integrated throughout the course. Requisite Information: PR., INF 101 or equivalent.
BCOM 301 - Business Communication
A study of the various aspects of business communication. The course includes the application of the principles of written communication to business letters and reports, the development of listening skills, nonverbal communication skills, job search techniques, and presentational techniques. Requisite Information: Junior Standing. Writing Intensive courses are writing enhanced courses in which writing plays a major, integrated role in the learning of the content and concepts of the course. Students will receive a Writing Intensive notation on their transcripts.
BCOM 400 - Global Business Communication
The study of the importance of business communication in conducting global business effectively. Emphasis will be on organizational and interpersonal communication and negotiation skills needed in an integrated world economy. Includes culture based assumptions, contrasting cultural values, negotiation strategies, verbal and nonverbal patterns, cultural shock, and business social etiquette and customs. Requisite Information: BCOM 301 - Non-Lab Pre-Requisite
