Faculty Information
Availability of shuttle buses
Shuttle stops (marked by A-frame signs that say “Commencement Shuttle Stop”) are available at the following locations from 7:15 am to 1:00 pm:
- Lot A2, near the College Dr. entrance
- Lot D, near the exit/Malloy Hall
- Lot Q, between the fountain and the north driveway
- Lot J, near the Elm St. entrance
- GMC, at the north end of the building, near Gate 2
Flagbearers
Flagbearers provide the division between colleges and lead in the candidates from the graduate school and academic colleges.
Prior to the ceremony
- Attend the preparation/training meeting related to the event.
- Review the training video, if needed.
- Arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.
- Collect your stole from the Tiger Room, Cunningham Hall Room 137.
- Check in with one of the event marshals to determine where you are in the processional.
- Find the location of your graduates in the hallways and assist the marshals in lining up candidates 10 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. Graduates march into the Coliseum in two lines.
- Once the processional begins, you process in front of the marshals and students from your college. Move through the hallways following the processional.
- Retrieve your flag/banner located in front of the Department of Health and Human Performance Office.
- Upon instruction from the Commencement staff, proceed into the Coliseum. Process to the front of the stage where assigned seating is in front of the ramp to your left. Set the flag/banner in the base and move to your seat.
After the Ceremony
- Return your stole to the Tiger Room, Cunningham Hall Room 137. Exit the Coliseum as quickly as possible through Gates 1 or 2.
Marshals
Marshals are critical for the smooth functioning of the ceremonies. Students need guidance in lining up in the hallways and processing into the Coliseum. Assistance with student rows and filing up to the stage is essential.
Prior to ceremony
- Attend the preparation/training meeting related to the event.
- Review the training video, if needed.
The day of the ceremony
- Arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.
- Collect your stole from the Tiger Room, Cunningham Hall Room 137.
- Check in with one of the event marshals to determine where you are in the processional.
- Find the location of your graduates in the hallways and assist in lining them up 10 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. Graduates march into the Coliseum in two lines.
- Once the processional begins, you and your students will move through the hallways following the processional.
- Upon instruction from the Commencement staff, proceed into the Coliseum. Assigned seating is located at the end of the rows, and your name will be designated on the assigned seat.
- After the President confers the degrees, you will be instructed by the provost to bring forward the candidates from your college to the stage. You will stand up and assist the candidates in each row to move forward. The event marshal will also be available to monitor the flow of graduates to the ramp.
- Once all the candidates from your college have exited the stage and returned to their seats, you will take your seat.
After the Ceremony
- Return your stole to the Tiger Room, Cunningham Hall Room 137.
- Exit the Coliseum as quickly as possible through Gates 1 or 2.
Participation
Faculty are invited to participate in the line of march for their college and are asked to arrive a half-hour prior to the ceremony. Faculty will line up in Cunningham Hall in preparation for the processional into GMC where designated seating will be available on the GMC floor. At the conclusion of each ceremony, faculty are asked to immediately exit the building. Opportunities to converse with graduates should be conducted outside.
