Diversity Student Organizations
Student Organizations
Student organizations are created and led by students. Student Engagement provides support and mentoring to all student organizations. More specifically, we have professional staff regularly meet with the following diverse student organizations to provide resources and support:
Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO)
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: HALO represents the Hispanic community by participating in University and civic events; acts as a support system for Hispanics who attend or who will attend FHSU; fosters and perpetuates their traditions, customs and culture; and assists FHSU in its efforts to promote its educational opportunities, in particular to prospective and current Hispanic students.
- Events: Hispanic Community Member Guest Speakers, Community Service Events in the Community, Tamalefest, Karaoke Night, Noche de Comida Latina, Loteria Night, Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration & Cinco De Mayo (Collaboration with Student Engagement), Arepas Night, Pan Dulce & Chocolate Abuelita, Fellowship Nights, Aguas Frescas Event, HALO Discada, Salsa Nights, General Meetings
Black Student Union (BSU)
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: The mission of the Black Student Union is to be a positive and productive representation of the Black community on and off the Fort Hays State University campus. We promote proactive leadership, scholarship, community outreach, and student empowerment. We embrace our cultural heritage, unity, and the appreciation of diversity. The BSU strives to unite our leaders by cultivating cultural awareness. Our programs serve as a catalyst for personal and professional development as well as social change.
- Events: Black History Month Banquet, General Meetings, BBQ Night, Movie Night, Bowling Night, Game Night, Ice Cream Social, Natural Hair Journey, Community Service in the Community
Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: A student-based organization whose focus is to promote the equality of all peoples, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. It is the purpose of the organization to educate both others and ourselves about issues surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Events: Transgender Forum, Community Service in the Community, General Meetings, Rainbow Read-In, Pizza & Presentations, The History of Drag in America, National Coming Out Day, Summer Nights Gala, GSA Inclusive Potluck Dinner
Muslim Students Association
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: To create a safe environment for Muslims and build a strong sisterhood and brotherhood. Additionally, to educate and create awareness of the religion to others and bring people from diverse backgrounds together. There may be fundraising events for special activities such as service projects and/or mission trips of the organization.
- Events: Eid Al-Fitr, Ramadan Feast, Regular Meetings
American Democracy Project (ADP)
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: Fort Hays State University is a national leader in The American Democracy Project movement. This initiative encourages American Colleges and Universities to prepare the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. The goal of the American Democracy Project is to produce graduates who are committed to being active, involved citizens in their communities.
- Events: Times Talk Series on subjects including; “The COVID-19 Outbreak in Latin America”, Free Speech, What to Expect in a Secual Assault Exam, International Women’s Day, Elder Abuse, Colorado Springs & The Libertarian Party, The Afghan Refugee Crisis, and more, Get the Scoop on Upcoming Elections, Constitution Day 2022 Event, Reading of the US Constitution
Arts for Social Change
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: A group of students that aspires to cultivate social engagement of all art forms to create positive change in our community, state, and world.
- Events: Paint the Town Purple: Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Banner Making Workshop, Campus Day of Unity, General Meetings, Convos Create Change Panel
Chinese Students & Scholars Association
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: The purposes to which the CSSA is dedicated are as follows: to promote the communication among its members, to organize, promote and conduct cultural related activities beneficial to its members, to disseminate information of interest to its members, to promote the friendship, culture exchange with the other organizations and communities at Fort Hays State University, in Hays, and in the United States.
- Events: Lunar New Year, Spring Festival Gala, General Meetings
International Student Union
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: ISU is a club of International and American students who represent its members, who are from diverse backgrounds and countries, working to empower students through social mixers, workshops, and cultural education trips.
- Events: Movie Nights, Lunar New Year, Friendsgiving, Across Cultures - International Student Panel, Walk to the Fort, Campus Day of Unity, General Meetings
Spanish Club
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: The Spanish Club FHSU is a departmental and student organization created for students and people interested in learning more about Hispanic Culture. This club helps organize events like Hispanic Dance Sessions (Salsa, Tango, Flamenco, Zambra, etc.), so that students, faculty, and the Hays community learn about Hispanic culture and diversity through music and dancing. The Spanish Club also organizes fundraisers to help the club get some funding. Most of the members of the club are Spanish Majors and Minors in the Spanish Program, but the club welcomes anyone interested in learning more about the Spanish Language, Hispanics, and their diverse cultures.
- Events: Hispanic Film Festival, Hispanic Dance Session (Salsa, Polynesian, etc.), General Meetings
Tiger Team
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: The Tiger Team provides a welcoming & empowering transition for traditional and (non) traditional students. Through our programming, we will provide services in forms of leadership, inclusion, and resources to help lead students to a successful experience. As well as assisting each student in finding their own unique path for success here at FHSU.
- Events: General Meetings, Hispanic College Institute, Summer Orientation, Pumpkin Painting, Welcome Weekend, Community Service in the Community, Valentine’s Day with Our Friends at Homestead
Tigers for Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: Tigers for IDD is a way to get college aged kids more involved in their community, specifically the IDD community. We want to encourage inclusion through sports, games, dances, movie nights, and every other aspect of life. We want to increase the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and build relationships and a family feel that will last a lifetime. Join us once a month to learn about how you can get involved with the IDD community here in Hays, KS. We can't wait to share the love and joy with you.
Women in STEM
- Purpose Statement of the Organization: A group of like minded individuals looking to expand the number of women in science, technology, engineering, and math through collaboration, commitment, and community. Our meetings will consist of hosting panels, guest speakers, forming study groups, and crafts for destressing.
