2011 First Place Finish
Cameron Werth, Layne Krizek, Nolan Kempke, Tom Johansen
The Fort Hays State University team of Nolan Kempke (Claflin senior), Layne Krizek (Hays senior), and Cameron Werth (Hays senior) placed first in the 2011 Financial Planning Challenge held in San Diego in September. This national competition, presented by the Academy of Financial Services (AFS), Ameriprise Financial, Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board), and the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), is open to those universities that have CFP Board-registered undergraduate programs. Under the direction of Dr. Tom Johansen, financial planning program director and competition coach, Fort Hays has been in the top five in the nation every year for the past ten competitions. The competition has three phases: a written financial plan, an oral presentation of the plan, and a game show competition. The teams with the top eight written financial plans in the country advanced to the finals to present their plans and participate in the game show. This year's competition included teams from William Paterson University, Kansas State University, Texas Tech University, University of Georgia, University of Missouri, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Metro State University. Fort Hays claimed top honors in the written plan phase and the game show competition to seal the victory.
