Dr. Paul Nienkamp
Dr. Paul Nienkamp has an MA in Physics from Creighton University and Ph.D. in the History of Technology and Science from Iowa State University. His areas of interest are the history of education, history of science and technology, American agricultural history, 19th century American history, and interdisciplinary studies and learning. He teaches American and world history survey courses, early American Republic, the Civil War era, Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Kansas History, and is the Director of History Secondary Education. He currently serves as the chair of the Department of History and Philosophy.

Dr. Marco A. Macias
Marco A. Macias earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Arizona in 2018. Before that, he had received two masters in Latin American Studies and Public Administration and a bachelor’s in Political Science, History, and Latin American Studies. He specializes in Latin American history, with a concentration in Mexico. His areas of interest are in cultural studies and sensory history. He is currently developing a monograph on Francisco Villa and his portrayals in popular culture and collective memory.

Hollie Marquess
Hollie Marquess earned her B.A. and M.A. in History from Fort Hays State University. She specializes in American history (colonial era to the present), women’s history, gender, and sexuality. In addition to the survey courses, she teaches Orientation to History, Historical Methods, Women in American History, History of Sexuality, LBGTQ World History, The Second World War, America Between the Wars, and Colonial and Revolutionary America. She is currently working on adding new courses to the program’s offerings including Sports in U.S. History, WWII Resistance Movements, and 19th Century Social Movements. When Hollie isn’t teaching, she is likely reading or watching her son at a sporting event, sometimes at the same time.

Dr. Daniel McClure
Dan was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and California and earned a BA in History from San Francisco State University. He worked for 5 years in Heavy Civil Construction, including time on the first phase of the Golden Gate Bridge Retrofit Project and the San Mateo Bridge Widening Project. Dan returned to school to earn an MA in History from California State University, Fullerton, and then a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. Before arriving at Fort Hays State University in 2019, Dan taught the history, African American Studies, and International Studies departments at Chapman University, California State University, Fullerton, and the University of California, Irvine. Alongside various peer-reviewed articles, Dan has published two books: Historical Theory and Methods through Popular Music, 1970-2000: Those are the New Saints (Palgrave, 2017) and Winter in America: A Cultural History of Neoliberalism, from the Sixties to the Reagan Revolution (University of North Carolina Press, 2021).

Dr. Amber Nickell
Amber N. Nickell earned a Ph.D. in History from Purdue University, an MA in History from the University of Northern Colorado, a BA in History and Political Science from the University of Northern Colorado, and an AA in Liberal Studies from Aims Community College. Before that, she got a GED. Her historical interests include Central and Eastern Europe, the Holocaust and genocides, comparative migration and diaspora, human rights, the spatial humanities, and the digital humanities (among others). In her spare time, Dr. Nickell enjoys spending time with her family and animals, traveling, learning languages, volunteering, plotting world peace, and playing video games.

Dr. Kim Perez
Kim Perez took a circuitous route to the field of history; after her B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Kansas State University, she decided to ask historical questions about nature and science and went on to get her M.A. and Ph.D. in the History of Science at the University of Oklahoma. Her areas of expertise are the professionalization of the field sciences, women in field sciences, the nature study movement, and environmental history. She teaches a wide variety of courses, including Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation, History of Science, Disease and History, Local History, the Atomic Bomb in Popular Culture, Children’s History, and Gender, Race, and Science. In her spare time, you will find her doing something outside, including hiking, kayaking, and gardening. She also has a special fondness for dogs and volunteers for NBRAN, a Brittany rescue that rescued one of her two Brittanys.

Dr. Greg Atkins
Greg Atkins earned a Ph.D. in History from Washington State University, an M.A. in History from Oklahoma State University, and a B.A. in History from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. His publications and presentations reflect his interests in the histories of religion, race, the West, business, urbanization, and politics in North America during the long 20th century. He is currently working on a book that is tentatively titled, The Inner Temple of Americanism: Colorado Springs and White Christian Nationalism, 1880-2020. He is a busy dad who enjoys watching FHSU volleyball, learning Spanish and Portuguese, and serving as a trustee for the Ellis County Historical Society. Dr. Atkins also loves to travel and hopes to see Brazil with his family in 2025.

Food and Hunger Initiatives

Jodie Wear-Leiker began her career at FHSU in the summer of 2000 after leaving the field of law as a legal administrative assistant and the office manager for a local law firm, which she held for 14 years. She assists students and faculty in the daily functions of the office while managing departmental marketing, travel, and conferences/events. She also serves as the administrative assistant for the Food and Hunger Initiatives, processing transactions for the food pantry/garden and managing payroll and hiring duties of staff.
In 2005, she was awarded the Outstanding Technical Support Award given by the Colleague-to-Colleague organization at the Summer Institute of Distance Learning and Instructional Technology. In October 2023, she was the recipient of FHSU's first Staff Member of the Month award.
She enjoys visiting her daughter and following her life accomplishments, especially the photography business she has grown over the past several years.
