The FHSU Honors College is looking for first-year, transfer, KAMS/AMS, or current FHSU students who embrace and embody our mission to go above and beyond to get the most out of their time as an undergraduate, while contributing to our campus and community in special ways.
All Honors College applicants should complete the general FHSU application first, as an FHSU ID number is needed to complete the Honors College application. The general FHSU application is located here.
- To be considered for membership all candidates will complete an Honors College application, including 3 short answer questions and a resume. Students should typically have at least 2 years left in their degree program.
- Strong applications will display attention to quality writing, as well as thoughtful, reflective, and creative approaches to the essay prompts. Resumes should include education, employment, community engagement, and other extra-curricular activities you feel are important.
- Highest achieved ACT/SAT scores should be submitted as reference only for Honors College membership consideration. Candidates should have approximately a 3.5 cumulative GPA, but others may be considered based on the quality of the rest of the application. (See Scholarships page for more information on scholarship eligibility.)
- KAMS graduates or current FHSU students who are applying to the Honors College should meet with Honors College staff to discuss their goals as part of the application process. You may contact us with any questions or to schedule this discussion – or you may complete the application first and we will contact you to schedule this discussion.
- FHSU Online students should have a minimum of 4 semesters remaining at at-least half time status. The highest cumulative college GPA or combined cumulative college and high school GPA will be used for admissions consideration.
- Adult learners/non-traditional students are welcome and encouraged to contact the Honors College to determine their eligibility for Honors College admission.
Application Essay Prompts
1. Leadership means helping others to achieve a goal. Describe what you consider to be your most important personal experience with leadership and the impact it had on you.
2. Describe a goal you have for the next 5-10 years that involves engagement with organizations, groups, research, internships or other activities that go beyond coursework (this can include both professional and personal goals, and include activities both on and off campus). How can the Honors College mission support you in achieving this goal?
3. According to 2018 US Census data, 1 in 6 children in the US live in families with incomes below the official poverty line of $25,100 (for a family of 4). Describe an experience you have had and how it helps you think about ways to address this issue.
Scholarship Eligibility
Applicants will be reviewed for any of the Honors College scholarships for which they meet the minimum requirements, dependent on availability. Students may consider including an OPTIONAL 2-3 minute introduction video with their application stating three traits/characteristics that describe them and why they feel they are a good candidate for the Honors College. If they do not wish to submit a video, they may provide the same information in the "additional information" text box in the application, a link to a text document in the video URL box, or in the attached resume document.
You can find more information on all available scholarships here.
If a student was eligible but not awarded a scholarship due to availability, there is still a chance a scholarship will come available if another student declines their award. We will notify eligible students of any changes if a scholarship becomes available after they have been accepted.
If a student reports a new ACT/SAT score after they have submitted an Honors College application they are encouraged to email us directly with that update so that we can re-review their application, if scholarships are available. There is no penalty if a score goes down, at any time. We will always use the highest achieved score, or Superscore.
How are applications reviewed?
High test scores will not guarantee scholarships or admission into the Honors College. Applications are reviewed by committee, where the full range of submitted materials is taken into consideration. We hope to be able to see the student's impact, drive, passion, and commitment throughout. Show off your personality and your accomplishments! It is also important to review your essay responses so the committee finds them to be well thought out and well written. They may not be very long but they are important.
Timeline: Check for deadline dates at the top of this page.
Apply early for your best chance at a scholarship! All applications received before the priority deadline for scholarship consideration will be reviewed by our committee in late November. Offers of admission will be sent together with scholarship offers (via email from the Director) in early December.
Scholarship and admission offers made to priority applicants must be accepted by the response deadline indicated in the offer letter from the Director. After that date, accepted applicants retain their membership offer to the Honors College, but scholarship offers can no longer be guaranteed.
Applications received after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and scholarship offers will be made as funds are available.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns about your application materials, submission, or status. We will do our best to assist you!
