Institute for New Media Studies’ Research to be Presented at Scholarly and Creative Activities Day
Hays, KS -- The John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activities Day (SACAD) is an annual celebration of scholarly research and creative activity at FHSU. This year, the organizing committee has added oral presentation of ongoing research at FHSU. Scholars submitted their work, which was peer reviewed, and selected submissions were invited for presentations.
Dr. Gordon Carlson, Director of the Institute for New Media Studies, will present a project titled “Best of Both Worlds: Combining 360 Degree Video and Augmented Reality for Entertainment, Journalism, and Storytelling” investigating the vastly popular and widely growing realm of virtual reality and 360 degree videos. Currently, VR and 360 degree video simulations are formatted to tell stories, play games, and educate. The project deals with the content created for those forms of media, and looks to push current boundaries by developing a new platform for combining the best aspects of both media.
The project is led by Principal Investigator Matt Clarke and Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Nicholas Caporusso, both from the Department of Informatics. Co-Principal Dr. Carlson will represent the research team including four faculty members and six FHSU students.
The oral presentation will cover the underlying goals of the project, existing technologies, innovative content and technology created by the research team, and specific examples of their work. The presentation will demonstrate how powerful narratives and learning opportunities can be afforded through new software and videography techniques developed during this project. This is another strong example of the research collaborations possible in the Institute for New Media Studies for students, faculty, and community.
Oral presentations are scheduled between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday April 25th, 2018 in the Memorial Union Ballroom at FHSU. Dr. Carlson will present at 11:30am.
