Institute for New Media Studies Submits Project for Funding Through The National Institute of Standards and Technology
Hays, KS -- EQuipping User Interfaces for Public Safety (EQUIPS) is an integrated approach, developed by Dr. Carlson and the New Media Institute that allows researchers, industry, and public safety officers to accomplish two important functions simultaneously within a single platform. Researchers and industry develop user interface technologies, testing them in realistic training scenarios with public safety officers and public safety officers conduct advanced training, generating data for researchers and industry developing new technologies.
This project has been submitted to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Public Safety Innovation Accelerator Program – User Interface segment, with hopes of receiving funding to further development of EQUIPS at FHSU. This accelerator program seeks applications from eligible applicants for activities to accelerate research, development, production, and testing of user interface technologies and capabilities through the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for first responders.
The funding opportunity was announced on October 30th, 2017, requesting pre-applications be submitted by December 29th, 2017. Selected applicants, such as Dr. Carlson, were then asked to submit a Full Application by March 27th, 2018, which is currently under review by the NIST.
If with this potential funding, the New Media Institute and FHSU could become the forefront in research and application of first responder user interface technology for public safety officer training.
