Candles and service to celebrate MLK Jr. day
HAYS, Kan. -- To commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., the Black Student Union, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, Tigers in Service and the offices of Student Affairs and Diversity Affairs at Fort Hays State University are planning a day of service and a candlelight celebration dedicated to his life and work.
The theme for the day of service is "Courage to Build a Community of Social Justice." To help remember King's vision of non-violence and unity, FHSU is asking fraternities, sororities, individuals and all student organizations to volunteer time to be part of this service project.
The candlelight celebration is Monday, Jan. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The evening includes a speech by the Rev. James Manuel Jr., pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church of Nicodemus, the St. John's Military Color Guard and Marching Band, the First Missionary Baptist Choir and special music by Richard Hill, former member of the New Christy Minstrels.
The deadline for candlelight celebration reservations is by 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6.
