HAYS, Kan. -- Six Fort Hays State University students traveled to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for the 17th Annual National Character and Leadership Symposium on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The theme for the conference is "Guardians of Trust: Leaders in the Modern Era." Cadets are given the chance to visit with the students in seminars and discussions. The programs are designed to help students and cadets better understand the importance and challenges of having sound moral character and leadership skills.

FHSU students attending were selected by faculty and staff of the Department of Leadership Studies: Chance Bulmer, Wichita, freshman; Kennedy Hansen, Riley, junior; Jenna Johnson, Colby, junior; Kelly Matlack, Washington, senior; Levi Unruh, Hays, freshman; and Ramin Zangeneh, Lawrence, junior.

Guest speakers included: Brian Billick, former NFL coach and sports analyst; Mark Bowden, author of "Black Hawk Down;" and Jim Tressel, Ohio State University head football coach.

More than 200 students from undergraduate universities worldwide attended.

This is the first year for FHSU to participate. Dr. Brent Goertzen, associate professor of leadership studies and chair of the Department of Leadership studies, sponsored the students.
