HAYS, Kan. -- Bizarre plastic figures could recently be spotted beneath cars, burying the dead, pushing a tire swings or just hanging out on the Fort Hays State University campus.

The figures, created by FHSU students in a 3-D design class, were distributed the morning of May 12 to their various locations around campus.

"For most of the class, we deal with basic ideas and concepts in sculpture," said Toby Flores, assistant professor of art and design. "This gave the students a chance to explore conceptual art and design while keeping in mind an idea they would like to convey."

The figures were created with packaging tape and various props that adorned the pieces when finished.

"The students covered various body parts with a couple layers of high-quality packaging tape," said Flores. "They then cut apart the pieces and re-assembled them as a figure."

The class, made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores, is a basic requirement for any of the studio art courses at FHSU. About 30 students were involved in the project.
