HAYS, Kan. -- The Science and Mathematics Education Institute of Fort Hays State University and the Boy Scouts of America are co-sponsoring a one-day event, "Power Up for the Future," from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 1. The day begins with check-in and an opening presentation by Dr. Paul Adams, Anschutz Professor of Education and a professor of physics at FHSU, in Albertson Hall, room 169.

From there the students will go to Tomanek Hall for a wide variety of presentations and activities. The final presentation will be on "Sustainability," by Dr. John Heinrichs, chair of the Department of Geosciences, in Albertson Hall, room 169.

Power Up is an opportunity to educate young people on the various types of energy, help them learn to conserve energy and help them to become aware of sustainability issues. It is open to students in grades three through 12, with various sessions planned on many different types of alternative energies, energy conservation and sustainability. The presentations, given by representatives from Midwest Energy, Sunflower Electric, Ellis County 4-H and FHSU professors and students, will include many hands-on activities.

Students will have the opportunity to build a solar-powered model race car, use a stationary bicycle to transform energy into electricity, make ethanol, make their own solar oven, learn about energy generation and see how different forces of energy work together to power our daily activities.

A minimal fee of $5 will be charged for each student. Lunch is available on campus for an additional $7. Students may also choose to make their own lunch arrangements. Other family members are welcome to attend at no additional cost.
