FHSU student's to celebrate Gutenburg Day
HAYS, Kan -- Three students at Fort Hays State University have collaborated in an effort to announce Wednesday, Feb. 3, as Gutenberg Day to celebrate how easily accessible information has become.
Rebecca Farr, Hays senior, Aaron Jacques, Hays senior, and Ian Tompkins, Dodge City senior, were sitting together in a classroom recently discussing how students, parents and community members should be more aware of news issues on the radio, TV and Internet. This led to the discussion on the amount of information available now and how it is so easily accessible.
Johannes Gutenberg was the inventor of the printing press, which eventually led to major newspaper publication and distribution worldwide. Gutenberg died on Feb. 3, 1468.
On Feb. 3, the three FHSU students will conduct a presentation called "A History of Informatics" at a Times Talk at 11:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union's Stouffer Lounge. The presentation will cover the evolution of informatics, breakthroughs in technology, new developments of print and social networking using the Internet.
The students will also participate in a radio talk show on KFHS called, "Talking Democracy" at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 with host Chapman Rackaway. The show talks about events in western Kansas related to democracy, society and governance. The talk will be directed at Gutenberg and his printing press as a vital part of an informed democratic government.
