HAYS, Kan -- Broadcasting students from Fort Hays State University won five awards, including three first-place honors, in the 2010 college broadcasting competition of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

"These awards are extremely important for Fort Hays State and our media studies students," said Mel Hanks, FHSU assistant professor of informatics. "These students should be especially proud of their achievements considering they come in competition with much bigger schools throughout Kansas."

First place for the best-taped television newscast was awarded to the talent and production crew of KFHS-TV for the show that aired Feb. 11, 2009. Kassidy Knowles, Salina, junior, won first place for best TV anchor and Andrew Stossmeister, Broomfield,Colo., junior, won first place, for best radio station sports play-by-play for his broadcast of the Tiger basketball game against Northwest Missouri on Jan. 30, 2010. Stossmeister worked as an FHSU intern at Fox Sports in Denver, last summer.

Kyle Haas, Arkansas City junior, won second place in the television sports play-by-play category for his broadcast of the Southwest Baptist at FHSU basketball game. Hass also served as a sports intern for the Kansas City Royals last summer. Charles Lammers, Cheyenne, Wyo., special student, won honorable mention in the television intern category for his enterprise new feature on the Trego County Horse Show.
