String academy's 'Kids' Garbage Band' to explore music beginning March 27
HAYS, Kan. -- "Kids' Garbage Band," a musical experience that combines art, music and an exploration of world cultures, is coming this spring to Fort Hays State University's Western Kansas String Academy.
Starting Saturday, March 27, pre-school children 3, 4 and 5 years old are invited to join the fun as they make -- from recycled objects -- homemade musical instruments that can really be played. Each week, students will make an instrument native to a different continent, listen to music and stories from that area, and then learn to play their new creation.
Skills and information presented will include the science, history and cultures behind the instruments and musical skills such as rhythm patterns, basic music reading and how to play as an ensemble.
The class will be taught by Karen Rigler, who has a degree in music education from FHSU. She taught in a classroom for three years and is currently a full-time mother with three children. Rigler regularly teaches the Western Kansas String Academy's pre-school classes as well as private piano and voice lessons.
The class will run from 10 to 11 a.m. on six Saturday mornings, March 27 through May 1. The cost for the six-week program is $35. Parents are expected to attend with their children. Enrollment deadline is March 15.
