Six students from the Department of Informatics at Fort Hays State University recently provided Holy Family Elementary School with computer networking services by installing four wireless access points in the school as part of their capstone course, a course designed to showcase the knowledge students have gained from previous semesters and to put that knowledge into action.

The students were Doug Church, Lakin special student; Austin Gabel, Hays senior; Ryan McQuade, Hoisington senior; Michael Meyer, Shawnee senior; Vernon Pflughoeft, Lorraine special student; and Troy Vallejo, Leoti senior.

In addition to setting up the wireless network, the students labeled and documented the network and developed a troubleshooting manual to aid the staff with common problems. They also developed a mock-up website.

The project was completed over a four-month period from February to May.

Jana Simon, Holy Family principal, said the network was a great benefit to the school.

"Their knowledge and skills have really made a difference at Holy Family Elementary," she said.

The new access points use the latest wireless "N" technology. The full network documentation will help cut troubleshooting time for the volunteer computer staff, and the manuals will help staff solve common problems without outside assistance. The website designed by the students will provide a new branding option for HFE.

The students said they enjoyed working with HFE and learned skills that will benefit them throughout their professional careers.
