HAYS, Kan. -- While SuperCroc is in its last month of exhibition, Sternberg Museum visitors also have the opportunity to experience cell phone audio tours for certain exhibits, a new addition to the museum.

About 20 displays and exhibits in the museum have a guide-by-cell logo on them, indicating an audio tour is available. On the logo is a phone number. Visitors may dial it, follow the prompts and select a tour for a certain exhibit.

"The person simply listens to a narrative about that display," said Mark Kellerman, the museum's director of public relations. A pre-recorded message explains what the visitor is seeing.

Dr. Reese Barrick, museum director, brought the idea to Hays from the museum where he previously worked.

"The cool thing about the cell phone audio tour is we can expand it or change the content as often as we want," Barrick said.

Not only do the audio tours tell visitors more about the exhibits, but they also allow people to leave feedback by pressing zero at the end of the narrative, similar to leaving a voicemail message.

"Folks can leave a comment on that exhibit or the museum in general," said Kellerman.

Kellerman said he believes the audio tours will benefit the museum by giving visitors more information than just what is written down.

"It kind of dresses up the display, lends a further insight," he said.

The SuperCroc exhibit's last day at Sternberg is Thursday, Aug. 5. To raise funds for the Discovery Room, the museum is hosting "Say Goodbye to Croc Carnival" from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1.

The museum is looking for volunteers to either work part of the time or the whole day. People can also help out by baking cakes, pies and cookies for the cakewalk and concessions or by making a monetary donation, which will be used to help buy food for the concession stand.
