FHSU welcomes students with Augustfest
08/17/10
For the rest of the month of August and into September, Fort Hays State University is celebrating the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year with Augustfest, a series of events, activities, programs and opportunities designed to welcome students and introduce them to campus life.
Students can get involved in Tiger Impact orientation events and student organization meetings and attend picnics, open houses, comedians, musicians and more.
Augustfest events are created by various groups, student organizations, and departments across campus.
Some big events of the 2010 celebration include Taste of the Memorial Union and Comedian Michael Dean Ester's presentation on Friday, Aug. 20; Games on the Lawn on Saturday, Aug. 21, and Class Crawl on Sunday, Aug. 22.
Tiger Market, Pizza Hut, Coyote Jacks, Mondo Subs and the Salad Bar will all be open for student dining during Taste of the Memorial Union.
Comedian Michael Dean Ester's act will challenge young people to discover the reasons for pursuing a degree in college.
Students can join the fraternity and sorority community for Games on the Lawn to play yard games and participate in the largest FHSU campus water balloon fight.
Class Crawl gives students the opportunity to visit the locations of their classes prior to the start of the semester. Tours will leave every 15 minutes.
Freshmen are required to attend five of the Augustfest events: Move In Day; PlayFair; New Student Orientation and Academic Orientation; Ultimate Road Trip; and floor meetings.
Move In Day is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19 at the residence halls. This event is for students who will be living in the residence halls. Students will meet their resident assistants and move into their rooms.
Playfair, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Quad, is an opportunity for students to create new friendships by interacting with other incoming freshmen.
The New Student Orientation and Academic Orientation is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. FHSU will preview the university experience, help students understand university policies and procedures and provide opportunities to familiarize students with university resources and services. Speaker Judson Laipply, the man from the "Evolution of Dance video," will perform at orientation.
Ultimate Road Trip, 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, helps first-year students start planning their "ultimate road trip" to college success.
All freshmen must also attend their floor meetings at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, in the residence halls.
