09/08/10 jgm Local, Today
HAYS, Kan. -- Auditions for "The Vagina Monologues," a production of the Student Feminist Organization of Fort Hays State University, are scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, in the Black and Gold Room of the Memorial Union on the FHSU campus.
The play is a collection of monologues written by Eve Ensler based on interviews she conducted with a variety of women about their experiences. Every year, a new monologue is added to highlight a current issue affecting women around the world. The characters come from all walks of life, from a 75-year-old virgin to a dominatrix who specializes in pleasing women.
The monologues, which will be presented from March 3 to March 5, 2011, is a part of a nationwide "V-Day Movement," to increase awareness of sexual and domestic violence. In 2009, the monologues raised more than $5,000, which was donated to the Northwest Kansas Domestic and Sexual Violence Services to help support survivors of violence.
Auditions are open to all FHSU students, faculty and staff. Men who would like to get involved behind the scenes are welcome to attend the auditions as well. Rehearsals will be Jan. 24 through Feb. 27.
