HAYS, Kan. -- Four current and one retired Fort Hays State University faculty members from the Department of Communication Studies recently attended the National Communication Association's 96th annual convention in San Francisco, Calif.

Faculty representing FHSU were Dr. Margaret Butcher, assistant professor of communication studies; Carrol Haggard, associate professor of communication studies; Dr. Sue Strohkirch, professor emeritus of educational administration and counseling; Dr. Hsin-Yen Yang, assistant professor of communication studies; and Dr. Qingjiang Yao, assistant professor of communication studies.

Strohkirch represented the state of Kansas at the States Advisory Council meetings as a member of the Legislative Assembly.

Yang presented the paper "Japanese Media and Taiwanese Youth Consciousness: A Discourse Analysis of Taiwanese Online Bulletins," which was part of her dissertation completed last summer at the University of Iowa.

Yao participated in the panel on "Bridging Japan-U.S. Communication: Toyota's Crisis Communication and Media's Response." His presentation focused on the coverage of the Toyota crisis in the New York Times and China Daily News.

Butcher and Haggard presented "A Cross Cultural Investigation of the Relationship between Ethnocentrism and Intercultural Willingness to Communicate." The paper was part of a series of studies that examined the effect of culture on those two elements.
