High Plains Band & Orchestra Camp opens
More than 300 middle school and high school band students from Kansas, Nebraska and Tennessee are in Hays for the 64th annual High Plains Band and Orchestra Camp on the Fort Hays State University campus.
Founded in 1947 by the late Harold G. Palmer, the camp offers students the experience of studying music with outstanding musicians from around the country for both band and string students.
"Music allows you to express your feelings in different ways," said Lacy Robertson, a percussionist from West Middle School, Liberal. "At camp, I enjoy getting to play my instrument and meeting new friends. I always have a great time."
Students experience a week of stimulating and concentrated study in the art of music under the guidance of nationally recognized musicians, teachers and conductors. The camp began with registration and tryouts on Sunday and will end with junior high and high school ensemble performances, band concerts and orchestra concerts on Saturday.
Every day, campers' schedules are filled with rehearsals, classes, sectionals and ensembles. Special events like a trip to the Hays Aquatic Park; a Rock, Paper, Scissors Contest; and Camp Idol Contest are also planned. Each evening features a concert by guest artists, faculty and campers.
"The camp is a valuable and social experience for the students," said Michelle Postier, camp director. "The students gain valuable experience working with talented guest artists and teachers that come from all over the state."
