HAYS, Kan. -- Three works by Michaela Groeblacher, McPherson graduate art student at Fort Hays State University, were accepted into the Wichita National All Media Craft Exhibition.

"Every time some of my work gets judged in national shows, it is a thrill," said Groeblacher. "I see it as important to exhibit my work and to compare it to and with other great quality work. I want to hone my skills in expressing my philosophy on relevant issues through visual art."

Based on Greek mythology, two stoneware ceramic pieces depict the goddess Demeter and goddess Persephone. "Persephone" is covered in gold leaf and also includes dried pomegranates. "Demeter" sits on a glass shelf and includes dried leaves.

"My work is concentrated on women and a woman's place in society," said Groeblacher. "The women represent real and fictional historical characters made relevant in western culture of today."

Groeblacher went on to say, "In Greek mythology, Demeter is the goddess of wheat, harvest and day-to-day work. Persephone is the 'spark,' the inspiration, the beginning, the planting of a seed. There is incubation time, inspiration (Persephone), growth and harvest (Demeter) in all our creative processes."

The third piece is based on the well known bust of Nefertiti, the wife of Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten and a strong, influential and successful woman. "Nefertiti 2020" rests on an antique film reel and includes photographs of 100 influential women in history.

"My 'Nefertiti 2020' depicts the same pose as the original. However, it bears my daughter's face, a very strong, successful young woman," said Groeblacher. "With the inclusion of the photographs of important women in history on a film strip, this piece talks about the ongoing and future importance and successes of strong women in society."

The exhibition opens Friday, Aug. 26, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Center for the Arts in Wichita. The exhibit closes Sunday, October 16.
