HAYS, Kan. -- Christian Challenge at Fort Hays State University introduced two new service times this fall -- 7 and 9 p.m. -- to accommodate for its growing membership.
"We have seen significant growth over the past few years both at Challenge and in our leadership team," said Carin Cochran, Christian Challenge Director. "We decided something needed to be done to accommodate all the students who wanted to be there and the best plan was to offer two times each week. "
"I'm excited about the two services because I think I'll be able to get to know people better since it will be in a smaller group setting," said Kali Merklein, Kiowa junior. "I can't wait to see how this will open new opportunities for people to come that couldn't previously because of work or other obligations."
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 13, Students had the opportunity to attend Challenge at either the 7 p.m. or the 9 p.m. service with worship, bible study and fellowship time.
What started 18 years ago as a meeting at the Baptist Campus Center on Elm Street of six people sitting around a table has now grown to about 230 students attending the weekly services.
"My favorite part about Challenge is seeing everyone coming together to serve and worship one God," said Merklein. It is very encouraging and uplifting to my faith, especially if I have been having a hard time, it's good to know that I'm not going at it alone."
"We are very clear that our group is centered on Jesus Christ," said Cochran. "We want to give students the opportunity to grow in their relationship with God, and it has been really exciting to see so many students respond in such a positive way."
Challenge currently meets on Tuesday nights at CrossPoint-Hays, located at 13th and Harvest Road.
