During the first-ever Hays Paint-a-Thon, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, TIS, Kansas Corps and the Hays Rotary Club will paint houses and fix up the yards of several Hays residents. Volunteers will paint the exterior of three local houses for elderly or disabled homeowners. TIS is also looking for volunteers before then to help prepare the houses for paint.
Also on Sept. 24, Kansas Corps will be in Melvern to assist elderly residents with cleanup of their homes. Jobs will include cleaning windows, power washing siding and painting homes. So far, 16 homes need work. Kansas Corps is looking for volunteers for this event.

TIS will team up with Diversity Affairs, the Gay-Straight Alliance and UAB to host Diversity Week Band Festival from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, to raise money for human trafficking awareness efforts. Comedian Guy Branum, co-writer of the hit television show "Chelsea Lately," will be featured.
Kansas Corps will travel to Reading on Saturday, Oct. 15, to help rebuild from the EF3 tornado that hit Reading in May. Jobs will range from helping build infrastructure to painting homes and much more. Kansas Corps is looking for volunteers for this event. To volunteer in Reading, contact Schmeidler.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, volunteers will be needed to read to and entertain children at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina.
From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, volunteers will be needed to help with TIS's Fifth Annual Boo Bash at the Hays Public Library, second floor. Pre-schoolers through fifth graders are invited to come in their costumes for art and craft activities and games. Volunteers will help facilitate activities, set up and tear down.
TIS also needs volunteers to help set up and participate in "Night at a Haunted Museum" on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. The time is yet to be announced. Volunteers will help set up and participate in the events.
To honor troops who serve and have served, TIS will host a Veteran's Day Ceremony at 10:55 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, in the Quad on the FHSU campus. TIS asks volunteers to join in making care packages and "thank you" cards for service men and women.
TIS also hopes to partner with Diversity Affairs to put on a program for World Aids Days and plans an alternative winter break from Dec. 30, 2011, to Jan. 5, 2012.
TIS promotes and provides community service opportunities in Ellis County and other communities to encourage social responsibility, community involvement, thoughtful action and civic engagement.
