HAYS, Kan. -- Linda Ganstrom, professor of art and design at Fort Hays State University, will unveil a new series of ceramic sculptures as part of the "Look and See" exhibit opening at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kan., on Friday, Sept. 23. The opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m.
Ganstrom will have about 10 pieces in the exhibit. "This exhibit contains iconic, spiritual poses with contemporary women underscoring the impact of individual decisions and action on the future," she said. "Each individual has the power of her own decisions and actions instead of relying on past institutions."
"I like to play with words, and this collection, titled, 'Bell(e)s,' means two different things. Part of it is thinking about women, such as belles of the ball or women who appear to be larger than life," said Ganstrom. "You can also think of a church's bells and their significance."
Among many pieces, "Helping Hands, Tiara," was inspired by the idea of people helping each other. The whole body of the figure is made up of molds of hands. "We all have a network of people helping us get through, and this is what inspired me for 'Helping Hands, Tiara.' "
Ganstrom is one of nine artists in various media featured in "Look and See."
