Ships, roller coasters, games figure in FHSU's math andscience summer camps

HAYS, Kan. -- The Science and Mathematics Education Institute at Fort Hays State University is offering four camps on the FHSU campus this summer for elementary and middle school students.
Camp Invention is June 4 through June 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for students entering first through sixth grades. The program instills vital 21st-centurylife skills such as problem solving and team work through hands-on fun.
This year's program includes "Magnetropolis," ship building and magnetic exploration; "Inventeureka," time travel and invention exploration;" I Can Invent: Balloon Burst," deconstruction of broken machinery; and "Action and Adventure Games," creating a new game.
Space is limited to 40 children. Early registration, on or before March 30, is $90. After March 30 the cost is $115.
Fast Track is June 11 through 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students entering third through fifth grades. Students explore math and science through manipulating and racing remote control cars.
Students participate in team-based driving challenges that demand the process of science using the real application of math.
Registrationis limited to 20 participants. A registration fee of $60 per camper is due at time of registration. The deadline to register is June 1.
STARBASERobotics is June 25 through 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for students entering fifth through seventh grades. STARBASE introduces students to the exciting world of LEGO robotics and space.
Students will learn to build, program and test LEGO robots and LEGO Mindstorms EducationNXT software. After completing robotics basic training, students will take robotics to the next level as they apply their knowledge and understanding to a variety of robotics challenges and competitions.
Registration deadline is June 1 and is limited to 20 participants. A registration fee of $60 per camper is due at the time of registration.
RollerCoasters Science and Art Camp is June 25 through 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students entering sixth through ninth grades. This camp explores the artistry, math and science behind building and promoting roller coasters. Students will design and build working model roller coasters.
Registrationis limited to 35 participants, and the deadline to register is June 15. A $60 registration fee is due at the time of registration.
