HAYS, Kan. -- Fort Hays State University's College of Education and Technology will sponsor five different workshops in June for the Kansas Center for Innovative Education (KCIE). Each workshop will be held at the Sternberg Museum from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and will offer refreshments and handouts.

Three are for one graduate credit each and two are for professional development. The three graduate credit workshops cost $235.50 plus a $50 registration fee. The two professional development workshops have individual registration fees and award participants a certificate of completion for eight clock hours.

For graduate credit, participants must have been accepted into the FHSU Graduate School. For those who are not already students in the Graduate School, enrolling for graduate credit is a three step process and has a $35 fee:

Step 1 -- Apply online to the FHSU Graduate school -- www.fhsu.edu. Click on GraduateStudent then Admissions located on the right side, then the Apply tab. Scroll to US Applicants then click Online Application.

Step 2 -- Contact the FHSU Helpdesk at 785-628-5276 to set up a TigerTracks account, which is needed to enroll in a workshop for credit.

Step 3 -- After enrollment, the workshop must be approved by the Graduate School. Once it's approved, the payment button in TigerTracks/Enroll will be highlighted and payment can be made.

The three graduate credit workshops are:

June 8: "Enhancing Academic Achievement in Reading Through Movement" will focus on state assessment scores and finding time for activity based classes such as music, art and physical education. Materials will be provided. The registration deadline is
June 1.

June 20: "Texts Meets Technology: The Integration of Technology in Reading" will focus on the integration of fiction and non-fiction literature and incorporating technology into reading and mathematics instruction.This workshop requires a textbook, which adds to the total cost. The registration deadline is June 13.

June 22: "The Leadership Simulation for Team Building" is centered on a survival simulation to improve problem solving through learning interpersonal and rational skills and behaviors that lead to successful teamwork. The registration deadline is June 15.

The two professional development workshops:

June 7: "Updating Strategies Using New Children's and Young Adult's Literature" introduces participants to new literature titles for students from pre-kindergarten through high school, reviews new perspectives on favorite ways to include literature in lessons, and shares new ideas for teaching literature, including using technology. The registration deadline is May 31. Registration fee is $55.25.

June 21: "I Can Do It: Effective Classroom Management" gives information about the elements necessary for successful classroom management, communication and learning styles, hints to create a smoothly flowing classroom and other topics. Registration deadline is June 14. The fee is $50.
