HAYS, Kan. -- Fort Hays State University's Math and Science Education Institute will host multiple teacher workshops throughout June and July. Four of these workshops will target subject matter by using hands-on activities, promoting new instructional methods, taking short field trips and more. All workshops will take place on the FHSU campus or at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

"Strategies to Teach Common Core Standard for School Mathematics," June 4-7, aims to strengthen current teaching strategies while introducing new instructional methods.

All techniques align with common core standards. This workshop is exclusively for mathematics instructors teaching fourth to eighth grades. Registration costs $120 per participant.

Instructors interested in using the study of ice properties, displacement, pressure and density in the classroom should attend the "Ice, Ice, Baby" workshop on June 5 in the Sternberg Museum's Expeditions Room. Lectures will cover polar glaciers and icebergs.

This workshop is designed for instructors of kindergarten to eighth-grade students. Registration, $10, includes materials, snacks and lunch.

Through two days of classroom instruction, travel to a local wind farm and lectures by Dean Stramel, chemistry instructor, participants of the Fort Hays State Wind Workshop will acquire knowledge of wind-to-energy transformation.

The Wind Workshop will be June 21-22. Registration is $25 and includes free wind energy kits.

The NASA Robotics Workshop will utilize a member of the Aerospace Education Services Project while instructing participants in the basic use of Lego Robotics. While instructors are encouraged to bring Lego Robotics Kits, they are not necessary.

This workshop is July 16-18 at the Sternberg Museum. Registration costs $25. Lodging and meals costs are not included.
