HAYS, Kan. -- Two performances are left in the Fort Hays State University-Hays City Band's 2012 season. The first is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in WaKeeney and the final performance is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Historic Fort Hays.

"Our band currently consists of FHSU faculty, high school and middle school band directors, college and high school students, and general community members that love playing music," said Dr. Jeff Jordan, associate professor of music and theatre and the band's director.

The band offers outlet for music lovers through free community concerts. The FHSU-Hays City Band is open to all ages and skill levels.

"We have four performances each year," said Jordan. "Our concerts are all outside, so we are limited to the warmer weather."

The season starts in early June and concludes around the Fourth of July to allow FHSU faculty in the band to help with the band camps on campus.

They play a variety of music including Broadway hits, marches, patriotic tunes, old classics and some solos.

"I really like working with the people," said Jordan. "Anyone who can play music ought to be able to make music throughout his life. With some things, like basketball, there is a time when one's age limits the ability to play. This is not the case with music. I have had people thank me for the opportunity to play in the band, because they don't get the chance to play nearly as often as they would like to."
