HAYS, Kan. -- Achievements of men such as Galileo, Leonardo and Fermi as well as other intellectuals graced history through their foundation of science and mathematics.

The Fort Hays State University Science and Mathematics Education Institute will travel to Italy in May 2013 to experience the sights and history of Venice, Florence and other cities where these inspirational intellectuals once lived.

"Accompanying exploration and historic sightseeing is in the opportunity to indulge in culture, all while earning university credits," said Dr. Paul Adams, professor of physics and Anschutz Professor of Education at FHSU. "A designated tour guide and I will lead this study-abroad experience from Friday, May 24, to Sunday, June 2."

The total fee for students is $4,097, which includes a side trip to Pisa and Tuscany, and rooming with three to four people. The total cost also includes round-trip flights, transportation, a full-time tour director, hotels with private bathrooms, breaks, five dinners and the enrollment fee.

The cost can be split into monthly payments.

For adults, the cost is $4,337, including the trip to Pisa and a room supplement for a twin room.

Prices will go up $50 on Sunday, Sept. 1.

An optional online course is offered prior to the trip, "Following Galileo's Footsteps." Through this course, participants will gain a sense of Italy and its scientific history. "Although it is not a requirement for tour participation, it will surely enrich the experience," said Adams. "The tour itself is a required part of the course and is available to those in need of graduate credit hours for recertification."
