HAYS, Kan. -- Each semester, the German film series offers an opportunity for students to view contemporary and classic German films sponsored by Fort Hays State University's Department of Modern Languages. All films have English subtitles and are screened at 7 p.m. in Albertson Hall room 169.

"All the movies are the original German language movies with subtitles so you don't need to speak German to enjoy them," said Claudia Rink, instructor of modern languages. "Come experience some great movies that are very interesting, entertaining and offer drama, romance and comedy from a German cultural perspective."

"The Lives of Others (Das Leben Der Anderen)" showing Sept. 13, is approximately 138 minutes long. It is set in 1984 East Berlin. An agent of the secret police finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed into the life of a writer whom he is conducting surveillance.

Romance blossoms Tuesday, Sept. 25 when Ludo, a gossip-columnist, is sentenced to eight months in jail but is released on probation to work 300 hours for a local daycare where he meets Anna. "Rabbit Without Ears (Keinohrhasen)" runs for 116 minutes.

The sequel, "Rabbit Without Ears 2 (Zweiohrkuken)," showing Thursday, Oct. 25, is about 124 minutes long.

In "Good Bye Lenin," showing Tuesday, Nov. 13, a young man tries to protect his fragile mother, by keeping her from learning that her beloved East Germany has disappeared. Set in 1990, the drama runs for about 121 minutes.

"We have picked a selection of popular contemporary German movies free for you to enjoy in a theatre-like atmosphere," said Rink. "Feel free to bring a friend, popcorn and pop."
