Diversity Affairs to bring Joan Hecht to FHSU
10/30/12 jb
HAYS, Kan. -- Joan Hecht and the Lost Boys will share their heartfelt and inspirational stories of being refugees at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the Fort Hays State University campus.
Hecht founded the Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan Foundation in 2004. The Lost Boys were separated from their families in the civil war in Sudan in 2000 and 2001. Approximately 3,800 Lost Boys and 85 Lost Girls found refuge in the U.S.
In 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between North and South Sudan was signed, and the Alliance for the Lost Boys Foundation was able to expand health, education, humanitarian aid and rebuilding projects in Southern Sudan.
"Hopefully the audience will have a better understanding about the orphan refugees and have a better appreciation for the privileges they have now," said Amber White, coordinator of diversity affairs. "This event is free, and I am excited and hope everyone comes out to hear what Joan Hecht and the Lost Boys have to share."
