HAYS, Kan. -- The 34th annual Kansas High School Math Relays at Fort Hays State University will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Memorial Union.

Students will compete against each other in a series of six tests: algebra, geometry, number sense, applications, trigonometry and calculations with calculators.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences predicts that 500 to 600 students from about 50 schools will compete.

"Individuals and teams will be given 20 minutes to complete each test," said Dr. Bill Weber, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. "Students can get into teams of three to work as a relay team. One student will start, then one-third of the way through the second student will take over, then the final student."

At the end, awards will be presented to the top three places in the individual and team categories for each grade level and in each subject. The top three schools overall will also get awards based on the total points they earn in their Kansas State High School Activities Association classification. Divisions are 1A; 2A to 3A; and 4A to 6A.
