HAYS, Kan. -- "Ghost Towns and Gold Mines," an exhibit by visiting artist David Jones, will kick off arts for Homecoming and October at Fort Hays State University with an opening reception from 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art in Rarick Hall on the FHSU campus.

The Moss-Thorns will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 6, for a special Homecoming viewing. The gallery's normal hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

"I have been working on this exhibit for the last six years," said Jones. "I travel all over the country installing my work for exhibitions, but mostly in the western region of the country."

The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday, Oct. 4, until Friday, Oct. 26. Free refreshments will be provided.

"Made from wood, steel, cast iron, cast aluminum, paints and plastics, this exhibit explores the boom and bust cycles that exist in our society," said Jones.

Jones will install the exhibit on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and Wednesday, Oct. 3. Jones will host a demonstration called "Finish It," at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Rarick Hall, room 124 displaying various ways of finishing materials to have an aged or weathered look.

He will also conduct an artist's critique for students from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., then Jones will speak about his art work and what inspired him at 6:30 p.m. in Rarick Hall room 114.

"I am bringing my exhibit to FHSU for two reasons," said Jones. "One, I am excited to have been brought in by the Creative Arts Society as a visiting artist, and two, it is important to me as an artist making work about the west to bring the work to an audience in western states like Kansas."

Shawn Spangler will give a public lecture about ceramics at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in Rarick 114.

"Curtains," a musical where a lone Boston detective, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, played by L.J. Kemper, Topeka sophomore, investigates a series of murders that take place behind the scenes of a fictional 1950s cowboy musical, "Robin' Hood." The cast of "Robin' Hood" is forced to stay inside the theatre while Cioffi unravels the mystery, getting involved with the show and in the process falling in love with cast member Niki Harris, played by Hayley Funk, Quinter sophomore.

Tickets are $15 for the public and $7 for FHSU students with valid student ID.

Department of Music and Theatre faculty will perform in the annual Faculty Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center located in Sheridan Hall. Performances are:

Dr. Ivalah Allen, assistant professor of music and theatre, soprano, and Pam McGowne, staff accompanist, piano, will perform "O Mio Babbino" from Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini.

Brad Dawson, assistant professor of music and theatre, trumpet, and Tom Meagher, piano, will perform "Centennial Horizon" by Kevin McKee.

Dr. Joseph Perniciaro, assistant professor of music and theatre, tenor, and Dr. Irena Ravitskaya, assistant professor of music and theatre, piano, will perform "Lenski's Aria" from "Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

Dr. Kristin Pisano, assistant professor of music and theatre, clarinet, and Ravitskaya, piano, will perform "Polacca" from Concerto No. 2 by Carl Maria von Weber.

Pisano, clarinet, and Hilary Shepard, instructor of music and theatre, flute, will perform "Sultry" from "Three Romances" by Daniell Dorff.

Ravitskaya, piano, McGowne, piano, and Dr. Terry Crull, assistant professor of music and theatre, narrator, will perform movements from "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens.

Shepard, flute, and McGowne, piano, will perform "Variations on a Theme by Rossini" by Frderic Chopin.

"The purpose for the Faculty Showcase is to highlight many of the music faculty in a recital format for both students and the community," said Allen. "There is a large variety of types of music being performed. There will be pieces many will recognize from hearing them before, but didn't know what the music was from."

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 senior citizens and free for children and students under age 18 and FHSU students with valid student ID.

The Encore series presents "TAP-The Show," at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Beach/Schmidt. TAP is a powerhouse production, celebrating the artistry of tap dance from around the globe. "included in the show are recreations of some Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly numbers, Broadway show stoppers, smooth and sultry soft shoe, flamenco, tribal, and Irish step. For reserved seating, tickets are $30 for the public, $28 for senior citizens and children under age 18, and $21 for FHSU students with valid student ID. For unreserved seating, tickets are $26, $24 and $17 respectively.

The Wind Ensemble, the university's top concert band, the Fort Hays Singers and the Concert Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Beach/Schmidt. The ensemble will perform "Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare," by Richard Strauss; "The Ramparts," by Clifton Williams; "Color," by Bob Margolis; "Nocturne," by David Dzubay; "Folk Dances," by Dmitri Shostakovich; and "Shepherd's Hey," by Percy Grainger.

"Sharing music with others, especially students, is always a great joy," said Dr. Jeff Jordan, associate professor of music and theatre.

The choirs, led by Crull, will perform folk songs. The Fort Hays Singers and Concert Choir will sing the same songs only in different versions by two different composers. Crull has chosen "All Through the Night," "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," "The drunken' sailor", "Danny Boy," "Elijah Rock." The FHSU singers will perform "Stayed on Jesus" and the concert choir will perform "I Can Feel the Spirit"

In its 99th season, the Hays Symphony Orchestra, composed of FHSU students and faculty, and Hays area community members, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in Beach/Schmidt. "Mostly Mozart" will have three pieces, "La Follia" by Francesco Geminiani, from "Concerto Grosso," "Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major" by Mozart, and "Symphony No. 29 in A Major," by Mozart.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 senior citizens and free for children and students under age 18 and FHSU students with valid student ID.

A faculty recital by Allen, will be , at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Felten-Start Theatre, located in Malloy Hall. The first half will include songs from Mozart's operas "Le Nozze di Figaro." During the second half, Cline, cello, Shepard, flute, and Ravitskaya, piano, will accompany Allen in "Chansons Madecasses" and five songs from "I Never Saw Another Butterfly." Allen will also be accompanied by Topeka musicians Dr. Craig Treinen, alto saxophone, and Pat Gibson, piano.
