HAYS, Kan. -- Mathematics education majors at Fort Hays State University are learning valuable career skills through the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science's free tutoring services.

Tutoring is available for FHSU students enrolled in general education courses such as college algebra, statistics and calculus methods.

"It's a good way to help not only our students that are struggling in math to get them through a course with a passing grade, but it's also excellent training for math education students," said Dr. Bill Weber, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. "Our math education students are able to get paid for things they need to practice anyway, and they get good at skills they need to know."

"We typically hire a lot of our math education students that are going to be teachers anyway," said Weber. "This is perfect practice for them to explain a concept several different ways in order for a student to understanding it. It's a huge advantage for them -- sort of on-the-job training."

Statistically, mathematics is a subject that many students struggle with.

"It keeps FHSU students from having to go out and pay for tutoring services," said Weber. "This service is taken care of by the department because we see there is enough of a need on campus that the department absorbs the cost to provide this service free to students."
