HAYS, Kan. -- Only 17 volunteers will be accepted for this year's Fort Hays State University Tigers in Service Alternative Winter Break trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., from Jan. 12-20. Applications are due Monday, Nov. 12.

Tigers in Service will volunteer at Habitat for Humanity, Tuscaloosa, to build homes in the area. These homes are given to selected families who have completed all the requirements.

"Students will be building houses all week," said Becca Kohl, Hays sophomore and Tigers in Service co-director. "Luckily, this doesn't mean they need to be construction experts. The magic of Habitat is that they have work for anyone with any level of capabilities. We'll also most likely be getting a tour of the University of Alabama football stadium and other parts of Tuscaloosa, like the river walk."

The trip will cost $50 for housing, food and working on the houses. The only extra money students need will be for souvenirs or food for the drive to Tuscaloosa and back.

"Kelsey Coglazier, director of event operations and sports marketing for the city of Tuscaloosa, was a student director of Tigers In Service a few years ago," said Kohl. "She was able to find us a spot to work with Habitat for Humanity."

Tigers in Service is also looking for a faculty sponsor to go on the trip along with Tigers in Service co-directors Arin Powers, Woodward, Okla., sophomore, and Kohl.
