HAYS, Kan. -- Throughout the year, the Tiger Food Exchange pantry in Forsyth Library on the Fort Hays State University campus provides food for community members in need.

"The food pantry has received around 2,700 food items since its opening, and gave out around 75 food items and three holiday meal packages over Thanksgiving," said Brendon McCampbell, Hays senior and student coordinator for food and hunger initiatives. "We accept food continually throughout the school year, and individuals can come and take food that they need."

For the Thanksgiving packages, items donated were "gently used" or new dishware, stuffing mixes, cans or boxes of broth, canned pumpkin, pie crusts, spices, canned or fresh potatoes, French fried onions, and sliced green beans.

The Food Exchange is intended primarily for the FHSU community, but no one in need will be turned away for food assistance.

Dr. Gladys Swindler, assistant professor of informatics, and her Introduction to Computer Information Systems class donated 2,032 food items to the pantry. This food will help individuals and families in need in the holiday season and some of it will go into meal packages.

The No Shave November Best Beard competition hosted by the Interfraternity council (IFC) raised $120 for the food pantry. Contestants filled out a registration form and paid five dollars to qualify. Out of 24 entries, Aaron Roach, St. John senior, was selected by members of the Panhellenic council as the winner, and he received an electric razor donated by IFC.

The pantry is located on the first floor of Forsyth Library and is open during library operating hours.

The Tiger Food Exchange will prepare more holiday meal packages for winter break.
