HAYS, Kan. -- The Council of Chief Research Officers of the Kansas Board of Regents is organizing a Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol event to share students' research experiences with state lawmakers in Topeka on Feb. 20, 2013.

The event showcases the work of up to 80 Kansas undergraduate students representing Fort Hays State University along with the state's other seven public four-year institutions: Emporia State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, Washburn University, Wichita State University, the University of Kansas and the University of Kansas Medical Center.

To qualify, participants must be undergraduates during the 2012-2013 academic year, have completed research under the guidance of a Kansas four-year public institution faculty mentor, followed the methodology of the appropriate academic discipline, been of sufficient quality to be presented at a professional academic meeting, produced a professional academic poster and agreed to undergo presentation training and rehearsal prior to the event.

Each institution will choose its participants with up to 10 from each school. Submissions will be accepted from student teams, but only one team member may go to the Capitol. That student will be considered the principal investigator though the entire team will be recognized.

Projects from a broad range of disciplines are encouraged, especially posters that relate to the state of Kansas and issues important to the Kansas Legislature, for example, education, health, agriculture and energy, among others.

Students must submit an application, a 250-word abstract and a recommendation letter from a faculty member. The application deadline is Jan. 11, 2013.
