FHSU Greek life gives back in fall 2012 with $5,600 in funds, 2,000 hours of service

Students involved in Greek life at Fort Hays State University raised $5,600 for local and national philanthropies and worked more than 2,000 hours of community service in fall 2012.

The FHSU community's two sororities and five fraternities represent 187 university students. Information was self-reported by each chapter president for a report compiled by the Center for Student Involvement.

Members of Greek Life are asked to contribute positively to the larger community, of which they are a part of through academics, philanthropy, brotherhood and sisterhood, leadership development, and campus involvement.

Altogether, the Greek community performed 2,100 community service hours during the semester, an average of more than 11 hours of service per member.

Individual chapters' total of $5,600 to various charities averaged about $30 per member. Organizations receiving donations included Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children's Miracle Network, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, Herndon Speech and Hearing Clinic, Options, Run for Regan, Special Olympics, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Susan G. Komen Foundation and United Way of Ellis County.

Eighty-nine percent of fraternity or sorority members are involved in 33 different co-curricular or community organizations, including the Black Student Union, Chemistry Club, Christian Challenge, FHSU Athletics, FHSU Band, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, Order of Omega, Student Government Association, University Activities Board, Up 'til Dawn and VIP Student Ambassadors. Thirty-four Greek community members were on the fall 2012 Deans Honor Roll.
